The University of Abertay in Scotland will be the first UK university to offer a degree in Ethical hacking from this September.

Graduates from this programme will be equipped with the skills to analyse and secure computer systems and networks, to design countermeasures against criminal intrusion, penetration and hacking, and with the capability to continuously update and develop their knowledge and skills in this rapidly-changing area. There is certainly a fine line between the computer security expert and the “black hat” hacker! Therefore, students applying for this course will be thoroughly vetted, and the background of each will be studied by the Home Office to ensure no criminals are able to sign up.

The BSc (Hons) Ethical Hacking and Countermeasures course will be run by Professor Lachlan Macinnon from September 2006 and looks to be a full time course lasting for four years.

There are currently many short courses in Ethical Hacking currently available, which lead to CEH (Certified Ethical Hacker) accreditation. These courses typically last 5 days and include intensive study in many areas of ethical hacking and network security techniques.
